Dr. Cobb and his staff are extremely happy to announce that we have expanded our practice to better serve the children in Kansas City, Olathe and Lawrence! Our newest partner, Dr. Vanessa Axelsen, excels at comprehensive children’s dentistry including emergency care, trauma care, restorative, orthodontic care and general anesthesia and sedation options. As a leading female pediatric dentist, she is passionate about her career and is dedicated to providing excellent care for children in the surrounding area. She also knows how important it is for parents to be involved in their child’s oral health and actively promotes interaction with the whole family.
Dr. Axelsen is an Oregon native who has always strived to be the best in everything she does. After graduating as her high school valedictorian in 2005, she traveled to Sioux City, Iowa to attend Morningside College, where she obtained her undergraduate degree. While she enjoyed her studies, she spent her free time doing what she loved, participating on the college’s track and field team. Her favorite part of track and field was mastering the javelin. During her time at Morningside, Dr. Axelsen competed in the NAIA and was crowned a three-time All-American in the javelin.
After completing her undergraduate studies at Morningside, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in biology in 2009, she immediately entered dental school at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She knew right away that her calling was pediatric dentistry. Her passion for children’s health pushed her to work hard and graduate first in her dental school class. She completed her pediatric dentistry residency in 2015 and is excited to begin her professional career with Dr. Cobb.
Dr. Axelsen and her husband, Mike, met at Morningside College and after graduating had the big decision of whether to return to Oregon where her family was still living or to move to Kansas City where his family lives. They decided to move to Kansas City so he could continue his pharmacy career to complete a hospital-based residency. They have been married for four years and have a very cute and cuddly French bulldog named Hugo. They love to travel, especially back to Oregon to visit family, and they are very nature-oriented and like to be outdoors where they can bike, hike or take Hugo on walks. They are also self-proclaimed foodies and love to try new restaurants and cuisines.
Here is what Dr. Axelsen had to say about her goals for her new practice and what she feels is the most important aspect in pediatric dental care.
“I want to serve the community and be a part of my patients’ lives. I want to be there for my patients to help them feel safe and comfortable and make them excited about their dental visits. I also think it is important for children with special health care needs to have a dental home. Working with special needs kids is very important to me and so is reaching out to their families. I want to let them know that we are there to make a sometimes difficult situation easier for them.”
Dr. Axelsen is currently taking new patients and would love to assist your family with their dental needs. She will gladly discuss any questions or concerns that you may have about your child’s dental health and offer suggestions on what treatments will be best.
